"Mr. Bean" actor Rowan Atkinson, whose character is known for hapless driving in the television shows and films, left a hospital Friday after being treated for minor injuries following a sports car crash in southern England.

The 56-year-old comedian was driving his McLaren F1 supercar — one of the world's fastest road cars — when he crashed late Thursday, striking a tree and a lamppost before the vehicle caught fire, authorities said.

Firefighters said Atkinson hadn't been trapped inside the car. Britain's Daily Mirror tabloid reported that the actor was able to walk away from the vehicle and flag down other motorists for help.

CBS entertainment chief Nina Tassler wouldn't reveal details of the funeral, but did say earlier this week at TCA that "programming standards and practices team is already on high alert.”

"A teacher has bonded out of jail after she was arrested for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a minor.

Miami Police arrested 29-year-old Waleska Velasquez on three counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, Thursday morning. Valasquez has since bonded out of jail.

According to police, Velasquez, a special education teacher at Miami Jackson Senior High School, stands accused of having an unlawful sexual relationship with one of her students while lavishing him with cash and gifts from 2009 to 2010. The 29-year-old woman also sent texts to the teenager with pictures of herself nude and in lingerie, police said. The boy is now 17 years old. He was 16 when the relationship supposedly began.

Miami Police opened the investigation after the Department of Children and Families received a tip on their hotline. Police said the special education teacher admitted to having an inappropriate relationship.
"When you send your child to school, you're going on the assumption that these adults are there to take care of your children," said Sarah Deben, a concerned parent, "so they've already broken the trust that every parent has placed on the teacher."

"Virginia Tech officials tell students on their website to stay inside and secure doors because of a report of a person with a gun in the area.

The alert, issued at 9:37 a.m., said the person with a gun had been spotted near Dietrick Hall, a dining area.

Dietrick, a three-story, 93,000-square-foot dining center, also houses a convenience store, laundry area and central bake shop, the Richmond Times-Dispatch notes.

Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., was the scene of shooting rampage in April 2007 that left 32 people dead and 25 wounded.

The Associated Press says the dining hall is steps away from where the 2007 shooting occurred.
Update at 11:23 a.m. ET: Amanda Huchler, a student on campus, tells USA TODAY's Rachel Roubein that she is among students locked in Hahn Hall. "The professor is still teaching," she says. "Everyone is calm, and no one seems worried. Tech is doing a great job of keeping everyone safe and secure."

Update at 11:12 a.m. ET: Larry Hincker, assistant vice president of university relations, says the report was called in by three students attending a camp called "Higher Achievement." "Former NFL defensive end and longtime television and movie actor Charles Aaron "Bubba" Smith was found dead in his Los Angeles home on Wednesday. Coroner's reports have not yet been released, but according to the Los Angeles Times, it is believed that Smith died of natural causes.

Smith attended Michigan State, where he was one of the most dominant collegiate defensive linemen of all time. He won All-America honors in 1965 and 1966, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988.

Selected first overall in the 1967 NFL draft by the Baltimore Colts, Smith soon became, along with Deacon Jones, one of the first truly modern-style pass-rushers and sack artists. "The United Nations declared a famine in three more regions of Somalia on Wednesday.

The capital of Mogadishu, the Afgoye corridor outside of the capital, and the Middle Shabelle region all now qualify has having famine conditions, bringing the total number of areas in Somalia up to five.

On July 20, the U.N. confirmed outright famine conditions in the Lower Shabelle and southern Bakool regions. Famine can be determined when "at least 20 percent of households in an area face extreme food shortages with a limited ability to cope; acute malnutrition rates exceed 30 percent; and the death rate exceeds two persons per day per 10,000 persons," according to the U.N.

The famine in Somalia stems from a number of causes, most noticeably a massive and long lasting drought in the Horn of Africa, which has all but halted agriculture in the region. MLB Has Questions About A-Rod's Starlight Poker Games

"Major League Baseball is starting to shine a brighter light on Alex Rodriguez's alleged participation in illegal high-stakes poker games, and the commissioner's office intends to bring in Rodriguez for questioning on the matter.

"We take this very seriously and have been investigating this matter since the initial allegation. As part of the investigation, the Commissioner's Office will interview Mr. Rodriguez," MLB spokesman Pat Courtney said.
Baseball sources say it's possible that Rodriguez's' participation in the games could lead to a suspension, if it is determined that he was actually present.

According to the initial report in Star Magazine, Rodriguez played in two games at a Beverly Hills mansion in 2009, where drugs were used and a fight nearly broke out after one player lost more than a half-million dollars.

Commissioner Bud Selig has spoken with Rodriguez before about his playing in the games, which have allegedly included other celebrities from sport and screen.

When the allegations first came to light a month ago, Rodriguez said that he would address it at the proper time, if needed. That time may be coming. "Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation announced Wednesday an immediate voluntary recall of approximately 36 million pounds of ground turkey meat because it may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.

Cargill's plant in Springdale, Arkansas, processed the fresh and frozen ground turkey products between February 20 and August 2, the company said in a news release.

Federal health authorities said Tuesday that an outbreak of Salmonella Heidelberg that has killed one person and sickened 76 others in 26 states appears to have been traced to ground turkey products.

The company said it has suspended production of ground turkey products at the processing facility until it can determine the source of the bacteria strain.

Other turkey products from Springdale are not affected by the recall. Nor are products from Cargill's three other turkey processing facilities in the United States." - read more - via CNN

"Pat Buchanan refused to apologize Wednesday for yet another racially-loaded statement, this time referring to the President as "your boy" to Al Sharpton.

"Some folks took what I said as some kind of a slur," Buchanan said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
"None was meant, none was intended, none was delivered."

The night before, on an MSNBC show guest-hosted by the mouthy New York civil rights activist, Buchanan riled Sharpton during an argument about the politics of taxes.

"Your boy, Barack Obama, caved..." Buchanan started to say.

Sharpton reared back.

"My what?" he said. "My president, Barack Obama? What did you say?"

"He's your boy in the ring," Buchanan said, chuckling at Sharpton's anger.

Smartphone adoption continues to grow rapidly across the world, reaching a total of 107.7 million units shipped in Q2 of 2011, a 73% year-on-year growth.

Android was the biggest driver of smartphone shipments in Q2, as Android-based smartphone shipments were up 379% year-over-year, coming in at 51.9 million total units shipped. Missouri Teachers and Students Can't be Facebook Friends... Its the Law

"You won't find teachers in Missouri friending their students on Facebook, or any other social network for that matter, this school year — not unless they want to violate a new law in the state that prohibits such contacts.
Senate Bill 54, signed into law by the Gov. Jay Nixon and taking effect Aug. 28, is quickly becoming known as the "Facebook law" in Missouri, although the bill is creates what is known as the "Amy Hestir Student Protection Act." Hestir was a Missouri public school student who was molested by a teacher decades ago; the law basically requires school districts to report any allegations of sexual abuse to state authorities within 24 hours.

School districts will also be liable if they fail to disclose suspected or known abuse by past employees to other public school districts that make inquiries about those workers.

But buried deep in the bill is Section 162.069 is a mandate that references social networking sites, as well as teachers not being allowed to have a "nonwork-related website that allows exclusive access with a current or former student":

By January 1, 2012, every school district must develop a written policy concerning teacher-student communication and employee-student communications. Each policy must include appropriate oral and nonverbal personal communication, which may be combined with sexual harassment policies, and appropriate use of electronic media as described in the act, including social networking sites. Teachers cannot establish, maintain, or use a work-related website unless it is available to school administrators and the child's legal custodian, physical custodian, or legal guardian.

"The legal battle over a sample used in Jay-Z's hit single “Big Pimpin'” continues in court, as a lawsuit has been filed against the rapper and producer Timbaland.

Ahab Joseph Nafal filed a $5,000,000 lawsuit on July 23rd in United States District Court, Central District of California.

The lawsuit revolves around the use of the song “Khosara, Khosara,” which Timbaland sampled in Jay-Z's 2000 hit single "Big Pimpin'."

Lawyers argued that "Khosara, "Khosara" was created in 1957 and was governed by the 1909 Copyright Act and not the 1976 Copyright Act.

The lawsuit was dismissed in 2007, because Nafal failed to join all individuals with rights to the composition in the lawsuit, as the 1909 Act mandates.

Bishop Eddie Long Has a 5th Accuser Come Forward

"Bishop Eddie Long, the outspoken Atlanta mega-church pastor who was accused of coercing four young men into sexual relationships and later settled the case out of court, could have faced more allegations from a fifth victim, according to a report.

Fox station WAGA-TV reported Wednesday evening that the fifth accuser, 22-year-old Centino Kemp, never officially filed a lawsuit, but confronted lawyers about his relationship with the pastor during recent settlement negotiations.

A lawyer close to the case confirmed with the station of Kemp's involvement, but claimed he was "different from the other young men" which made the case "more difficult."

Kemp told reporters that he met the pastor during a visit to his megachurch when he was a teenager. According to WAGA-TV, Kemp has a tattoo on his wrist with Long's name along with the words, "Never a Mistake, Always a Lesson."

Long chose not to fight the sexual allegation in court and instead reached a settlement and paid off the four young men who accused him of using his power to influence them into sexual relationships with him, reports CBS affiliate WGCL.

"The Redskins have reportedly agreed to the framework of a trade that would send quarterback Donovan McNabb to the Minnesota Vikings. Fox’s Jay Glazer reported the Redskins would receive a sixth-round draft pick in 2012 and a conditional pick in 2013 in return.

The deal is contingent on McNabb restructuring his contract, Glazer reported.

Neither the Redskins nor anyone in McNabb’s camp could immediately confirm the deal.

The Vikings had long been mentioned as the team with the most interest in McNabb, and the quarterback also had a desire to play for Minnesota, which runs a system that is very similar to the one he ran for 11 seasons in Philadelphia. But it was always believed that in order for a trade to be completed, the quarterback would have to agree to rework his contract.

The Redskins last November gave the six-time Pro Bowl quarterback a contract extension that included a $3.5 million bonus for the 2010 season. They would have had to pay him a $10 million bonus if he still was on the roster the day after the first game of the 2011 season.

Within the first ten minutes we got brief, ecstatic verses from both Jay-Z and Kanye West, and as the night went on Bun B popped in, as did the ubiquitous Fabolous, as did all of The Lox for some reason. It felt like a reminder that Jeezy—who hasn’t released an official album since 2008′s The Recession—is still a hugely popular part of the rap landscape.

Initially billed as a show honoring the release of Jeezy’s Def Jam debut Thug Motivation: 101, the idea was that he’d play the whole record front to back. "Toyrianna Smith, along with her 3-year-old daughter and and 3-month-old son, spent the night partying at a friend's house in Harvey, Illinois. Instead of heading home, the trio decided to sleep in a spare bedroom that night. But the baby boy was fitful during the wee hours...

He began to cry. Smith, apparently hammered and pissed that her sleep was being disturbed, decided to quell his outburst by putting a blanket over his head, then punching him multiple times in the face until he was quiet. (See her Facebook page here.)

The baby would cry again later that night. So Smith took on a more forceful approach to parenting. She again put a blanket over his head and punched him repeatedly in the face. Then she pushed down on his head, apparently suffocated him.

His legs and arms began to jerk until he was still.

Smith went back to sleep to get her beauty rest.

The next morning, she got the baby dressed and took him shopping for several hours. Then she stopped by a neighbor's house to visit. But the neighbor noticed the boy wasn't moving. Smith tried to claim he was sleeping, yet there was blood on the child's blanket.

Blood, the neighbor deduced, isn't a natural byproduct of slumber. So she called 911.

"A funeral was held Monday for a 15-year-old boy who died after suffering injuries in a car accident involving Los Angeles Lakers star Lamar Odom.

The boy, who was struck by a motorcycle involved in the crash with Odom's car Thursday night, underwent emergency surgery at a nearby hospital in Queens but died on Friday morning, TMZ reported.

Odom, 31, was in Queens to attend the funeral of his cousin and had hired a car service to drive him around. He was riding in the back seat at the time and his reality TV star wife Khloe Kardashian was not in the car.

Ja Rule Sentenced to 28 Months on Tax Charges

"Rapper Jeffrey Atkins, also known as Ja Rule, was sentenced Monday to 28 months in prison for failing to file tax returns with the IRS after admitting that he did not file his taxes for five years, the Justice Department said in a news release Monday.

The 35-year-old performer from Saddle River, New Jersey, had pleaded guilty to three of five counts before U.S. Magistrate Judge Patty Shwartz, who imposed the sentence in Newark federal court.

From 2004 through 2008, Atkins received royalties from ASJA Inc. and performance income from Rule Tours Inc., but failed to file returns that would have mandated he pay the government $1,137,912, the release said. Though he pleaded guilty to charges related only to the first three years, he will pay back taxes and penalties for all five, it said.

"Taxpayers do not have the luxury of deciding whether to comply with laws," Shwartz said in sentencing. She further sentenced Atkins to a year of supervised release.

The prison term announced Monday is to be concurrent with a previous sentence Atkins is serving on unrelated state charges." - read more - via CNN

"Police believe a 51-year-old Oregon man stabbed his wife and their four young children and set fire to their house on Monday, killing all five victims. The man was hospitalized as authorities tried to piece together the frantic scene.

Firefighters using CPR tried to revive the family members, and managed to get a pulse from at least two of the children as they lay on the lawn in front of their home, said Police Chief Tim George.

"The front yard looked like it was a plane crash or something, the people working on those folks," George said.

Rescuers quickly realized it wasn't just smoke inhalation they were dealing with and rushed the 30-year-old mother and the children — ages 2, 5, 6 and 7 — to the hospital.

But all five died. The father was also taken to the hospital, where he was sedated in stable condition and under police guard, George said. Police believe he killed his family, but did not immediately charge him.

"That is the suspicion right now — the fellow we have up at the hospital under guard is responsible," said George.

Though autopsies will not be done for a day or two, it is believe the five dead were all stabbed and suffered smoke inhalation, police said.

Investigators were getting a new search warrant before going back into the house Tuesday to gather more evidence, George said.

The house is a small, plain one-story structure in a working class neighborhood of older homes, some of them undergoing renovation, several blocks from downtown in this city of about 75,000 in Southern Oregon's timber country.

The father was identified as Jordan Adam Criado, 51, and his wife as Tabasha Paige-Criado, 30. The names of the children, three boys aged 7, 6 and 5, and a 2-year-old daughter, were not immediately released." - read more - via AP

One local football standout who's already reached the top level of the game is giving future stars a chance to learn from his experience on the gridiron.

A 2000 Poughkeepsie High School graduate who went on to become a third-round NFL Draft pick in 2006, Charles Spencer, Jr. will hold a pair of clinics at the city's Spratt Park later this month.

On July 16, the Charles Spencer, Jr. Football Clinic will welcome players entering ninth through 12th grade, while the July 23 event is open to players entering second through eighth grade. Both clinics run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Wilbur Blvd. facility.

"It's going to be huge," Spencer, who broke his leg in his second season with the Houston Texans and is working on returning to the NFL. "It will be a great chance for the kids to play before a lot of coaches."

The registration fee for the July 16 High School Clinic is $40 per player or $30 per player for teams of 10 or more. Registration for the Youth Clinic on July 23 is $35 per player or $30 per player for teams of 10 or more.

"The main idea is to get the college football players of tomorrow together with the guys from today," said a football standout from Our Lady of Lourdes High School and Fordham University Jordan Bledsoe, also of NorthStar Sports; the training facility, located on Titusville Rd. in Poughkeepsie, is holding both clinics.

Bledsoe said the Spencer clinics will serve to set up mentors for young players looking to play college ball.

"We're in a unique position here in Dutchess County, where we're frequently overlooked," he said. "I want to get guys together that I played with who had great college careers with guys in high school and youth programs today and have them connect."

"As Nicki Minaj spent her morning denying reports that she was hit in the lower lip by a mystery male in their hotel room in Dallas over the weekend, the police report has just been unveiled. And as we predicted it proves a physical altercation indeed took place.

Reports flew yesterday that 28-year-old Nicki Minaj and an "unidentified male" got into a hostile argument that started at their hotel pool and ended in the hotel room they were sharing. Nicki did not want to press charges, but the police were called and a report was taken.

Nicki denied any altercation took place. And while she may not have been punched in the face with a fist, according to recently revealed docs, she did tell Dallas police on the evening of July 11th that she was indeed hit in the face with a suitcase by said male at Hotel Palomar.

Now, the police report, gathered by the Dallas Observer, details that once Nicki and the mystery man took the argument back to the room, she "told him she didn't want him taking anything out of the room." The male's suitcase and personal belongings were in the room. Then, as he was packing his suitcase up, he "shoved the suitcase across [Nicki's] chin and lower lip."

Missing 9-Year-Old Brooklyn Boy's Body Found Dismembered

"The dismembered body of a missing 8-year-old Hasidic boy was found early today at two locations in Brooklyn -- with police arresting a suspect in the grisly slaying who had the child's severed feet in his freezer, authorities said.

Police made the gruesome discovery after raiding a Kensington home and arresting 35-year-old Levi Aron, who led them to parts of missing boy Leibby Kletzky's body, stuffed in a red suitcase and hidden in a Dumpster outside an auto repair shop about two miles away, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said during a news conference this morning.

"This is every parents' nightmare," said Kelly. "We understand that. This is what makes this case so horrific."

Kelly said Aron and the boy did not previously know each other.

Cops said Aron, who works as a clerk at the Empire State Supply Co. hardware store on McDonald Avenue in Kensington, allegedly suffocated the boy before chopping him up. Kelly said they also found three knives in a butcher block inside Aron's apartment.

Kelly said Aron "panicked" when he saw the police response to find the boy and "that's why he killed the boy."

"We don't know precisely the communication between the man and the boy," Kelly added.

Kelly said Aron confessed to the murder and told cops what had happened after they asked him about the boy. Charges against Aron are pending

Keith Carmickle was only saved when his brother, a friend and a group of fans grabbed his legs as he started tumbling 20 feet out of the stands.

The near tragic fall came during the derby's second round Monday, when Prince Fielder swatted a ball toward the right field stands at Phoenix's Chase Field.

(CNN) -- A heat wave is building and could reach dangerous levels in parts of the Midwest, the Plains and the Southeast this week.

Fifteen states are under heat advisories, which means temperatures are expected to exceed 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

Kansas City and St. Louis in Missouri are under an excessive heat warning, along with Tulsa, Oklahoma; Memphis, Tennessee; and Evansville, Indiana. In these areas, the heat index, or how hot the body feels due to the combined effects of heat and humidity, will reach between 110 and 115 degrees this week.

The advisories and warnings will remain in effect until at least Tuesday.

Several high-temperature records have been broken recently.

Wichita, Kansas, hit 111 degrees Sunday. The National Weather Service says temperatures of 111 degrees have only occurred there 10 times since July 1888.

Also on Sunday, the temperature in tornado-ravaged Joplin, Missouri, hit 106 degrees, and in Springfield, Missouri, it topped 102 degrees. Both of these temperatures bested high-temperature records set in the 1980s.

Oklahoma City hit a record high of 108 degrees Thursday, the same day that Tulsa hit a record high of 104 degrees.

High pressure over the Plains is keeping the weather pattern stable, allowing heat to build and suppressing thunderstorms.

Some relief is expected by mid-week as the high pressure system weakens and shifts slightly southeast. This will allow thunderstorms to develop in the central Plains.

Excessive heat is extremely hazardous to human health. According to information on the National Weather Service website, heat disorders can develop when the body heats too quickly to cool itself safely, or when a person loses too much fluid or salt by sweating or dehydration.

Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, pale and clammy skin, weak pulse, fainting and vomiting.

The agency suggests that people protect themselves from heat disorders by reducing activity during the hottest part of the day, wearing lightweight clothing and drinking plenty of water.

The agency also asks that people abstain from caffeinated or alcoholic drinks. Even meat and other proteins can increase metabolic heat production.

"It was a huge, terrible collision. Even though the boat is in one piece, they destroyed the front of the boat," Lt. John Watterson of the Dutchess County Sheriff's office said.

Watterson said the boat, a 19-foot Chris Craft bowrider, was only 10-15 yards from shore when the accident happened.

Derek Jeter's importance to the Yankees and his place in baseball history has often defied statistical definition. But he now has a significant number to go next to his name.

Jeter collected his 3,000th career hit on Saturday at Yankee Stadium, a home run off Tampa Bay's David Price at 2 p.m. on the dot. It was his 237th homer, only his third this season- he is not known for hitting them, but neither was Wade Boggs, whose 3,000th hit in 1998 was also a home run. It was a long one, too, clearing the first section of seats in left and landing in the bleachers, where some lucky fan was likely to recoup a six-figure reward.

The home run was Jeter's first at Yankee Stadium in more than a year and tied the game in the third inning.

Jeter was mobbed by teammates after he crossed home plate, the crowd standing and cheering for several minutes, and calling Jeter out. Jeter emerged from the dugout and lifted his fist for another roar. The crowd chanted his name for several more minutes, untilCurtis Granderson came up to bat at 2:04 p.m.

Jeter , 37,became the 28th player in major league history to reach the 3,000 hit mark, and entry into this group virtually assures future Hall of Fame status. With 60 more hits, he would move into the top 20 in history. It took Jeter 2,362 games to reach the mark; only seven have done it in fewer games, only six others have done it before turning 38.

The home run ball was caught in the bleachers by Christian Lopez, 23, of Highland Mills, N.Y., who returned the ball to Jeter. Yankee Stadium was filled for the occasion, many of the fans paying far above face value in anticipation that this could be the day. When the Yankees-Rays game on Friday was postponed by rain, it left Jeter needing two hits in two games to reach the milestone where he wanted most to do it, before his home fans.

Leading off the bottom of the first inning, Jeter worked the count full against David Price, then fouled off two pitches as the anticipation built. Then Jeter hit a ground ball between the third baseman and shortstop, a clean single, and the crowd erupted with a long, standing roar. One to go.

In the third inning, he came to bat with one out, again worked the count full and drove Price's curve ball far over the left-field wall. Jeter, who was first called up to the Yankees in 1995, got his first major league hit against Seattle's Tim Belcher on May 30 of that season. He became the Yankees starting shortstop at the start of the 1996 season, and got his 1,000th off Detroit's Steve Sparks on Sept. 25, 2000; his 2,000th on May 26, 2006 against Kansas City'sScott Elarton; and his 2,722nd, to break Lou Gehrig's Yankees record, on Sept. 11, 2009 against Baltimore's Chris Tillman.

Jeter went on to get five hits in the game, including a single in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in the tie-breaking run and lift the Yankees to a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. So he now has 3,003 hits. Only Craig Biggio of the Houston Astros, in 2007, got five hits in the game in which he reached 3,000.

A .312 career hitter, Jeter has averaged 206 hits per 162 games throughout his career, but his productivity has slowed since 2009, when he hit .334 with 212 hits. Last season he hit .270 with 179 hits. This year, having missed three weeks with a strained calf muscle, he's hitting .259 with 73 hits in 67 games, prompting suggestions he should be dropped to the bottom of the batting order. He came off the disabled list, six hits shy, on July 4 and and reach the goal in his fifth game since returning.

Mrs. Ford died Friday evening in Rancho Mirage surrounded by family members, according to the director of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.

President Barack Obama remembered Mrs. Ford as a "powerful advocate for women's health and women's rights" who "helped reduce the social stigma surrounding addiction."

"Throughout her long and active life, Elizabeth Anne Ford distinguished herself through her courage and compassion," he said in a statement Friday. "Today, we take comfort in the knowledge that Betty and her husband, former President Gerald Ford, are together once more."

Another former first lady, Nancy Reagan, issued the following statement on the death of Mrs. Ford:"I was deeply saddened this afternoon when I heard of Betty Ford's death. She has been an inspiration to so many through her efforts to educate women about breast cancer and her wonderful work at the Betty Ford Center. She was Jerry Ford's strength through some very difficult days in our country's history, and I admired her courage in facing and sharing her personal struggles with all of us.

Kennedy Space Center (CNN) -- Despite a good chance of thunderstorms, Atlantis is fueled up and ready to blast off Friday morning in the final mission of America's 30-year space shuttle program.

The very last launch for a space shuttle is set for 11:26 a.m. ET.

The crew donned their orange suits and were expected to depart for launch pad 39A at 7:36 a.m. The crew will begin boarding the shuttle shortly afterward.

Thousands of people, among them those who came to Kennedy Space Center three decades ago for the very first launch, gathered to watch. Almost a million are expected to be on hand to witness the historic event.

Violent storms Thursday prompted NASA teams to carry out checks on the Atlantis. NASA said the shuttle escaped damage from two lightning strikes.

The first shuttle, Columbia, blasted off in April 1981. Since then, the fleet of space shuttles have fixed satellites, performed scientific studies, and ferried materials and people to international space station Alpha, a football field-sized construction project in orbit.

In 134 missions, the five space shuttles have ferried 355 astronauts half a billion miles in space, turning heroic feats into the routine.

"I don't think we'll see another vehicle like it, for decades perhaps," Atlantis commander Chris Ferguson recently told CNN. "I mean, just the technology involved in flying back from space. It's an amazing vehicle, and its legacy will live on."
