Suffolk County police believe they may have discovered a fifth body after resuming the search for a missing New Jersey woman on Oak Beach, Long Island, Tuesday.
"Homicide detectives are investigating the discovery of what may be human remains found east of the area where the original remains were found," Suffolk County police told PIX11 News.
Detectives and K-9 Unit officers with their 'sniffer' dogs scoured an area near Oak Beach throughout the afternoon and into the night.
They were looking for Shannon Gilbert, who has been described by police as a prostitute, and was reportedly last seen screaming and running into the brush May 1, 2010 after meeting a client who she knew from Craigslist.
Gilbert is the 24-year-old woman whose disappearance police were investigating last year when, in December, they stumbled on a gruesome find about three miles from Oak Beach, in the area of Gilgo Beach.
They found a suspected serial killer's cemetery containing 4 skeletons dumped by the side of the road.
The four bodies were reportedly found clustered -- each within five hundred feet of the nearest other victim.
They were likely dumped from a vehicle as long as two years ago based on the state of decomposition.
But Shannon Gilbert was not among them. She remains a missing person. Police vowed to return to the area and resume searching in the spring after last winter's grisly discovery.
The first of the Gilgo Beach body's that was publicly identified was that of Megan Waterman from Maine who may have traveled to Long Island in response to an ad on Craigslist.
The New York City Medical Examiner helped local authorities identify Waterman's remains as well as the remains of the other three. Tuesday, police would not confirm that they had any suspects in Waterman's death, nor did they specify the cause of her death.
