Another one bites the dust...
"John Edwards' day of reckoning has come. A federal grand jury has indicted the disgraced ex-senator over his alleged use of campaign funds to cover up an extramarital affair during his 2008 presidential campaign.
A warrant has been issued for Edwards' arrest.
The case of USA vs. Johnny Reid Edwards contains six counts, including conspiracy, four counts of illegal campaign contributions and one count of false statements.
"Edwards knew that public revelation of the affair and the pregnancy would destroy his candidacy by, among other things, undermining Edwards' presentation of himself as a family man and by forcing his campaign to divert personnel and resources away from other campaign activities to respond to criticism and media scrutiny regarding the affair and pregnancy," the indictment said.
If the ex-poster child of the Democratic Party pleads guilty, he could be stripped of his license to practice law. A trial would almost certainly be lengthy, expensive and highly publicized -- where more salacious details about his campaign affair and the child he fathered during it would likely be revealed.
If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of five years behind bars and a $250,000 fine on each of six counts.
Edwards, 57, has been the subject of a two-year investigation into whether his political donors gave more than $1 million to Rielle Hunter, his campaign videographer and mistress, to hide the affair as he pursued a bid for the Oval Office." Read More - via DailyNews
