R.I.P: Bubba Smith Found Dead at Home
"Former NFL defensive end and longtime television and movie actor Charles Aaron "Bubba" Smith was found dead in his Los Angeles home on Wednesday. Coroner's reports have not yet been released, but according to the Los Angeles Times, it is believed that Smith died of natural causes.
Smith attended Michigan State, where he was one of the most dominant collegiate defensive linemen of all time. He won All-America honors in 1965 and 1966, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988.
Selected first overall in the 1967 NFL draft by the Baltimore Colts, Smith soon became, along with Deacon Jones, one of the first truly modern-style pass-rushers and sack artists. He played long before sacks were first tabulated as an official NFL statistic in 1982, but he was known from the start of his professional career to be nearly impossible to block." - read more - via Yahoo Sports

WTF?!: Ex-Giant Plaxico Burress Released From Prison Wearing a Phillies Hat (video)
WTF Plax?! A Phillies hat?! WORD?!.........
"Former Giants receiver Plaxico Burress strolled out of jail Monday wearing a Philadelphia Phillies cap and a big smile after 20 months behind bars on gun charges.
"It's a beautiful day," Burress said as he left the medium-security Oneida Correctional Facility in upstate Rome. "It's a beautiful day to be reunited with my family. I want to go home and spend some quality time with them."
Wearing shades, Burress thanked God and "all my fans all around the world for the thousands of letters, for their unwavering support."
Asked about a possible return to pro footbal, Burress answered, "If and when everything gets settled, when they get back on the field, I'll be ready."
Then Burress climbed into a black Range Rover and headed for a nearby casino to meet his wife, Tiffany, his son, Elijah, and a daughter, Giovanna, who was born while he was behind bars. They were expected to board a flight to his home outside Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. by 11 a.m.
"To miss two NFL seasons in the prime of your career, to not be with your family, most importantly, to lose out on millions and millions of dollars - these are things that have forced him certainly to evaluate his life," his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said.
Burress, 33, spent a lot of time running and doing strength exercise with an eye to returning to the NFL while doing time for a gun charge, Rosenhaus said.
"There are going to be multiple teams interested in signing him," Rosenhaus said. "I expect him to get a good contract. I expect him to absolutely be playing."
While Burress' best friends on the Giants, tailback Brandon Jacobs, said the team doesn't appear to be interested in the 6-foot-5 receiver, Rosenhaus did not nix a return to New York.
"I wouldn't rule out the Giants, I wouldn't rule out any club," he said.
Rosenhaus did not name any other teams that might be interested. But one of them is expected to be Giants' rival Philadelphia Eagles, which could explain why Burress was wearing a Phillies cap." Read More - via DAily News

The NFL's Newest Star: Cam Newton Selected #1
"Cam Newton’s selection as the first overall pick of the 2011 N.F.L. draft was more than a great accomplishment. For Newton, the selection was vindication.
From the beginning of last season to the end, Newton endured the most intense scrutiny of any star player in the recent history of big-time college football. He was plagued by whispers, then loud allegations, surrounding his recruitment to Auburn from junior college. The N.C.A.A. said his father had broken its rules with his involvement in a failed payment scheme with Mississippi State.
Through all of it Newton was a brilliant performer. He won the Heisman trophy by a landslide and led Auburn to an undefeated season and its first national championship in 50 years.
His selection Thursday marked the climax of a dizzying ride. It was also validation for the work of George Whitfield Jr., a 33-year-old San Diego-based quarterback coach who played a major role in reversing the tide of criticism directed at Newton." Full Article - Via NYTimes

NFL Star Brandon Meriweather Involved in Shooting
"When rumors surfaced yesterday of Patriots [team stats] safety Brandon Meriweather's involvement in a shooting in Apopka, Fla. two weeks ago, I spoke with the Public Information Officer in the Orange County (Fla.) Sheriff's office, who had no record of Meriweather being connected to any crime. The person did mentioned she'd been getting a lot of calls about it. A report by Deadspin.com this morning has an on-the-record account from a lawyer for two alleged victims, saying Meriweather shot his two clients." Read Full Article -- Via Boston Harrold

Haterville: Chicago Man Fired for NFL Tie @Work
From the Chicago Tribune:
"John Stone said that when he showed up at work, general manager Jerry Roberts called him over to his office and then ordered him to take off the Packers tie or else he would be fired. Stone said he thought Roberts was joking and went back to work. An hour later, Stone said, Roberts came to the showroom floor and again demanded he take off the tie. When he didn't, he was fired, Stone said.
"I didn't know you could get fired for wearing a tie," said Stone, 34, of Chicago's Roseland neighborhood. "I'm supposed to dress up. I'm a car salesman."
The Tribune goes on to detail how general manager Jerry Roberts said the dealership had previously done promotions involving the Chicago Bears.
"I don't feel that it was appropriate for him to go directly in contrast with an advertising campaign that we spent a lot of money on," Roberts told WGN reporter Judie Garcia.
Even if the manager's reasons are valid -- and I can understand his concerns about upsetting local customers or running contradictory to an advertising agreement with the Bears -- this still seems like something rational adults should have been able to talk through in about 30 seconds.
