The NFL's Newest Star: Cam Newton Selected #1


"Cam Newton’s selection as the first overall pick of the 2011 N.F.L. draft was more than a great accomplishment. For Newton, the selection was vindication. 

From the beginning of last season to the end, Newton endured the most intense scrutiny of any star player in the recent history of big-time college football. He was plagued by whispers, then loud allegations, surrounding his recruitment to Auburn from junior college. The N.C.A.A. said his father had broken its rules with his involvement in a failed payment scheme with Mississippi State.

Through all of it Newton was a brilliant performer. He won the Heisman trophy by a landslide and led Auburn to an undefeated season and its first national championship in 50 years.

His selection Thursday marked the climax of a dizzying ride. It was also validation for the work of George Whitfield Jr., a 33-year-old San Diego-based quarterback coach who played a major role in reversing the tide of criticism directed at Newton." Full Article - Via NYTimes
