Download Movies?: 23,000 People Targeted in BitTorrent Lawsuit

"Some 23,000 U.S. citizens who downloaded an illegal copy of The Expendables will soon learn that they are being sued in what could be the largest BitTorrent downloading case in the U.S. to date.
A U.S. district judge has given the U.S. Copyright Group permission to secure the identities — including names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses — of those who downloaded the film from their respective Internet service providers (ISPs).

ISPs will likely notify affected clients that they are handing over their subscriber information to the Copyright Group later this week.

Each defendant faces up to $150,000 in fines, although, as Wired points out, most cases result in settlements in the $3,000 range.

Collectively, more than 140,000 U.S. citizens are involved in lawsuits around the country for downloading illegal files via BitTorrent." - via mashable
