RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (PIX11) -- At least one person is dead and nine others are injured after a truck crashed into a small school bus carrying special needs students Wednesday, authorities said.
The accident happened on Sound Ave. near Fresh Pond Ave. in Riverhead around 3:30 p.m, when a Maryhaven Center of Hope bus, carrying six students, was sideswiped by a tractor-trailer, police said. The trailer overturned after hitting the bus, spilling the gravel it was transporting, leaking fuel and halting traffic for several hours.
According to reports, a helicopter was used to transport victims from the scene, which is in a rural area on Long Island. Five of the victims were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, but it isn’t clear where the other victims are being treated.
The bus was reportedly returning from a field trip at the time of the crash. According to its website, Maryhaven is an organization that has serviced special needs children and adults for more than 70 years.
No charges have been filed. A police investigation is ongoing.
