NEW YORK (WPIX)—Police are searching for a car jacking suspect they say stole a vehicle with a nine-year-old boy sitting in the back seat.
The frightening episode unraveled just before 9 a.m. Friday at the intersection of the Van Wyck Expressway service road and 109th Avenue in the Jamaica section of Queens.
According to police, when the suspect realized the child was in the car several blocks later, he pulled over and fled the scene.
The child and vehicle were recovered at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and 231st Street, police said. The child was unharmed.
It wasn't immediately clear why the child was sitting alone, unattended in the parked vehicle in the first place.
As of Friday afternoon, police are still searching for the suspect.
