NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Police said a single-engine plane landed in the surf not far from John F. Kennedy Airport on Monday night. All three people aboard were reported safe.
It isn’t clear what caused the plane to go down at about 7 p.m. in the waters off Rockaway near Beach 56 Street. Two passengers and the pilot were pulled from the plane by NYPD emergency crews. There were no injuries.
Police said the plane took off from Farmingdale and was headed west. The destination was not immediately known. It was not believed to be headed for the airport.
NYPD harbor and aviation crews responded to the scene. The cause of the mishap is under investigation.
