Just Dropout: Peter Thiel Gives $100,000 To Entrepreneurs Under 20

"Midway through his freshman year at Harvard University, Ben Yu felt like Harvard's core curriculum kept getting in the way of his other interests. So he dropped out.

Starting in January, Yu, 19, began doing the things he never had time for when he was enrolled in college -- he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and went caving in Kentucky. He also applied to become a Thiel Fellow.
Peter Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal and an early investor in Facebook, created the Thiel Foundation. Last fall, it announced a new fellowship program: It would give 20 people under the age of 20 $100,000 to drop out of school and become world-changing visionaries.

More than 400 young people applied. Earlier today, the 24 winners were announced. "The established path is always to stay and finish school," said Yu, who was among the 24 chosen winners. He wants to build a price-comparison service for online consumers to locate the cheapest products in the shortest amount of time. "For me, there was no reason to wait until I graduated to follow my dreams."

The only condition of Thiel's two-year fellowship is that all fellows commit full-time to making their ideas work. Simultaneously being enrolled in college is forbidden.

"These fellows are going to bring significant new ideas to a wide range of technical and scientific fields in ways that will change the industries and improve people's quality of life," said Jim O'Neill, who runs the Thiel Foundation. "Every field benefits from smart, driven new players."

The Thiel Fellowship gets at the heart of Thiel's basic complaint about higher education -- namely, that going to college gets in the way of entrepreneurship. He also believes that a higher education bubble threatens to dismantle the entire enterprise.

Thiel is correct about the rising cost of college, not to mention an increased amount of student debt. According to the Institute for College Access and Success, a nonprofit based in Oakland, Calif., the average college graduate now leaves school with an average of $24,000 in student loan debt. Meanwhile, one in 10 has difficulty securing a job.

But entering a weak economy without a college degree is a far riskier bet. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 20 percent of 20- to 24-year-olds with only a high school diploma are jobless.
Thiel's critics lament that his fellowship is merely another way for elites to get ahead, while college becomes increasingly inaccessible to the general public." - read more -via HuffingtonPost

A 21-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of three women after he allegedly shot them while driving in his car following a furious row with his girlfriend.

Jacob Gonzalez, from Corpus Christi in Texas, is said to have fled from the crime scene with his gun after he smashed his car into a pole on a busy highway but was caught by a bystander who tackled him to the ground.
Police believe the young man, who proudly put up pictures of himself on a social networking site holding a handgun, was 'sent into a rage' after having an argument with his girlfriend.

In pictures posted on Facebook, Gonzalez can be seen proudly showing off a silver handgun.
In one the alleged murderer points the gun directly at the camera and in another he poses with his girlfriend and the lethal weapon.

Gonzalez had also written an update on his profile, that read: 'Wish I was dead. So lonely I trusted her to keep me moven n lyfe. Bye everybody im killing maself luv u boo so depressed.'

Michelle Valdez, a close friend of one of the victims, Virginia Rodela, rushed to the scene minutes after the shooting and saw her slumped over the steering wheel.

Alert Facebook Virus!!!!..... Sike!... but just as bad

"Facebook will continue a plan to share users’ home addresses and cellphone numbers with third-party developers despite criticism from privacy advocates, users and members of Congress.

Pick Me!!!: Your Profile Pic Could be in a Facebook Ad

"Better go check your Facebook profile pic to make sure it's suitable for advertising—the company has begun using real users' postings in ads being shown to their friends. The effort is eerily similar to parts of the now-defunct Facebook Beacon, but Facebook is now calling them "sponsored stories," and users won't be able to opt out of their posts being used to advertise to friends.
The new "feature" started showing up quietly on Wednesday morning without any kind of fanfare from Facebook, but users began to notice it right away. Things posted by their friends; check-ins at businesses and "Likes" clicked from other websites started being highlighted in the right-hand column with the other ads, under the headline of "Sponsored Story."
Facebook says that the new ads are an effort to help marketers take advantage of what people are saying about them online. "Currently, marketers don't have the ability to know or plan word-of-mouth endorsements as part of their campaigns," Facebook's product marketing lead Jim Squires told the Wall Street Journal. "This gives a way for marketers to increase the visibility of stories about their organization… this is word-of-mouth marketing at scale."  Read Full Article - By Jacqui Cheng
